ExpressVPN Review

We have reviewed one of the biggest and well-known VPN providers around with over 3000+ servers across the globe in over 95+ different countries expressVPN is definitely no slouch in the VPN market.

What we instantly found out with ExpressVPN is that they are one of the best VPN providers for streaming content and Netflix due them having the best IP ranges that are not blacklisted with Netflix meaning you can switch the VPN to other countries and watch Netflix movies and tv shows restricted to that country.

But don’t be fooled this VPN can be used for anything as is one of the leaders in what the VPN can do so apart from streaming this VPN works equally as good for torrenting and providing you with the privacy and security you want when browsing the internet.

When we reviewed this VPN we stuck a 4.5 out of 5 star rating on it as it is one of the best VPNs you can use and it has great security with its military-grade AES 265-bit encryption and its tor capability.

We would say the only negative point we picked up on was the pricing was slightly higher then all the other VPN providers out there at $8.32 per month but its worth it if you also do a lot of streaming with all the other bonuses of a VPN you want.

How We Reviewed ExpressVPN

While we tested and reviewed ExpressVPN we took some main factors we like to see in VPN’s into account, so we had some checkpoints we mainly looked at with our testing and these were things such as:

  • Security & Privacy
  • Server Quality
  • VPN Speed
  • What Can You Stream With The VPN
  • DNS Leaks, IP Address Leaks, and WebRTC Leaks
  • Pricing and Deals
  • Can They Be Trusted (Review Websites)

We feel the above are good checkpoints to review most VPN providers and there VPNs and technology so we will jump right into our findings below.

ExpressVPN Privacy and Security

How Good Is ExpressVPN Security

Well as you may have read above they use military encrypted AES-265 bit encryption to make sure nothing is breaking it and your data is safe and has this across many protocols such as SSTP, L2TP/IPSec, PPTP, OpenVPN, UDP/TCP. So allowing you to use a range of protocols best suited to how you will use the VPN as each protocol can be used for certain tasks such as shopping, gaming, streaming, torrenting and more.

Does ExpressVPN Keep Logs

ExpressVPN does not keep logs so they have a no-log policy which is becoming ever so important in the VPN world, which means they do not log your connecting IP address or what you do on the VPN which is great for your privacy and freedom when using a VPN.

ExpressVPN has stated on their website they have a strict zero log policy and its also been backed up with a third-party audit to prove this point. You can see below what they don’t log.

  • Websites Visited
  • Torrents Downloaded
  • DNS Queries
  • IP Addresses
  • Browsing History

Now we checked to see what things they do actually log as this is another important thing on our review checklist to dig in to.

What Does ExpressVPN Log

Now rest assured none of the things they log below really matter in a privacy point of view as they are just for ExpressVPN feedback to keep on improving the many apps they have for your devices so there’s no breach of data or privacy with the following VPN logging.

  • Your server country choice
  • How much data has been used in MB
  • What apps you have activated for your devices
  • The date a connection was made to the VPN (No timestamps)

As you can see the above is nothing to worry about when you want your privacy to be secure.

Where Are ExpressVPN Located

ExpressVPN is located in the British Virgin Islands like some of the other top VPN providers. So this means they don’t follow the same internet laws as most other strictly based countries. Also, any VPN provider such as ExpressVPN located in the B.V.I (British Virgin Islands) is not part of the 5 eyes, 9 eyes, and 14 eyes countries which is a big plus for VPN providers.

Also, you will find with many of the offshore VPN providers located in places like the B.V.I and Caribbean countries do not have any data retention laws like Europe and the USA have.

How Many Servers Do ExpressVPN Have

Well with this VPN Provider being one of the biggest providers they have a fantastic network with over 3000+ servers in over 95 countries giving you a wealth of options to choose from when you are using the VPN.

Apart from having servers located in normal places such as Europe, USA, Asia and more common places they have them in rare places which you won’t find with many other providers. So they have servers to connect to in places such as Bosnia, Macau, Venezuela, and Myanmar. So yes they cover many countries and other countries that most VPN providers don’t cover.

VPN Features With ExpressVPN

With ExpressVPN being one of the leading VPN providers in the market they come with many great features that you would expect from a quality VPN.

TOR Compatability

They allow you to run the VPN with TOR which adds even more security. The way TOR works is it connects to other computers in a big internet network called nodes which adds additional layers of security. Using TOR alone is like using a VPN but using a VPN behind TOR can be even stronger but to be honest, just using a VPN is enough security you would ever need for your privacy and freedom.

Split Tunnelling

The VPN supports split tunneling which splits the encrypted traffic between applications you want the VPN to run on. So if you were downloading torrents for instance but did not want to run the VPN on your web browser you can set the VPN to just work with your torrent app so you get a little more speed not using a VPN on your web browser traffic this is a great feature that a lot of the more quality VPN providers have.

Private Zero Knowledge DNS

This is another great advantage to using ExpressVPN as when you visit a website normally it requests the domain name and leaves a log on what you call a DNS server but with the Zero-knowledge DNS, you do not have to worry about the DNS keeping any logs or records which is a good thing for you to look at when you’re choosing your VPN Provider.

Does ExpressVPN Leak

We ran our normal leakage tests for ExpressVPN to see if there is any part of the VPN that could potentially leak anything such as IP or location to see if it’s truly bulletproof.

WebRTC Leak

Not many people know what WebRTC is but it’s built into all modern browsers and allows for high-quality communication mainly used on chatting apps and video apps you may use. But sometimes a VPN might block the IP and location well but leak WebRTC information which is not ideal.

So we ran a test online to see whether the webRTC leaked and it did not so we are 100% sure you do not have to worry about leaks from WebRTC giving away the origin of your IP address.

IP Leak Test

We ran tests to see whether the IP address of the origin device leaked this is one of the main things to look at with VPN as if it leaked your IP address this would render the VPN useless but this is the job of a VPN to keep your private and anonymous but sometimes they can crash or have bugs which may result in your IP address being leaked.

After testing the VPN for a good while under different conditions and using online web leak test websites we did not find any leaks whatsoever with ExpressVPN so you will be fine to use it and not worry about IP leaks.

ExpressVPN DNS Leak Test

We also used some online websites to test to see if the DNS leaks and from are numerous test Express VPN passed with flying colours so no DNS leaks making this a great secure bulletproof VPN after running our normal main leak tests.

Virus Test

Finally, we ran a virus test to see if the application in itself had or was open to viruses. We used an online service to run the test and uploaded the file to the virus scanner and it came back clean.

Is ExpressVPN Good For Torrenting and P2P Sharing

Of course, when you have a VPN you normally may download a few torrents now and again. This is most of the reason why many may want to use a VPN in the first place on their personal computer to do some downloading of files they want.

So we uploaded some of our own files using the application uTorrent and then we proceeded to download them to test the VPN out and it performed great and kept a constant speed throughout the downloading of our files.

ExpressVPN also encourages torrent downloading and P2P but just make sure what you download is legal as in some countries such as the UK torrenting is declared illegal.

Express VPN Speed Test

As with all VPNs we test we always make sure to run a speed test as this is one of the most important aspects if you want to stream and game with the VPN.

So what we did was we tested the VPN using our own broadband with a download speed of 31Mbps. /we used to perform the speed test and we also tried a few different server locations with the VPN on the website.

We then averaged the speeds out and what we found was on average there was only a 17% speed decrease which is not bad at all as we tested many VPN server country locations and it averaged out to be 17% which countries closer to our origin country with just a 10% speed decrease.

How does ExpressVPN perform when Gaming

We know many of you will want to use a VPN while gaming for many reasons such as choosing different gaming server lobbies to play from and also staying safe so we ran ExpressVPN through our usual gaming test and speed test for gaming.

The good thing about ExpressVPN is there offer some great protocols that you may need to switch to while gaming such as TCP, UDP, and OpenVPN. We tested gaming out using the VPN and everything worked perfectly the same as if we weren’t using a VPN there were no issues even with the high bandwidth high graphical intense games we tested out.

Using ExpressVPN For Streaming Apps

We cant talk about VPN and what they are capable of without running test on streaming apps as let’s face it in today’s time everyone is watching some type of streaming apps whether that is Netflix, Plex, IPTV, Youtube, and the many more VoD type services everyone uses some type of streaming now so you would want the VPN to perform in this space so you can keep switched on and enjoy your favorite TV.

We mainly tested Netflix with the VPN with Netflix being the biggest movie and tv show provider around and we found it to perform exceptionally well with no buffering or freezes it made for pain-free TV. We also connected to different country VPN locations and they all opened up parts of Netflix which we wouldn’t be able to access if we weren’t using the VPN.

ExpressVPN was also one of the best VPN we have tested to open up the most country restrictions with Netflix allowing us to connect to European countries and watch their Netflix set up giving us access to even more movies and tv shows.

We also tested IPTV out while having the VPN active and again this worked without any hiccups such as buffering and freezing so using this VPN for IPTV works perfectly.

We would say ExpressVPN is one of the best VPN providers to use for streaming anything such as movies, tv shows, youtube, IPTV and more.

Can ExpressVPN Be Trusted And Are There Reviews

As always when it comes to VPN providers we scour the internet looking at the main review type websites and of course the front page of the internet Reddit.

Let’s start by saying ExpressVPN has been around a long time and is known for the quality of its VPN, Privacy and customer service as you will see below.

ExpressVPN Reddit

After looking through some threads on Reddit we can say overall they have great reviews that praise ExpressVPN for the apps, security and customer service.

We tried hard to find some negative reviews and we only found one that said the pricing is a little high to other VPN providers.

Express VPN Customer Support

After seeing the good reviews on the customer support it was time to go and test this ourselves by testing the live chat, email, and ticketing support that ExpressVPN offers.

After we tested each avenue of their support we found it to be better than most other VPN providers on the market it was fast and resolved the problems we asked them about so a big thumbs up to their customer support.

Our Final Recap On ExpressVPN

We would highly recommend this VPN for most as it has the best features and speed and works the best for streaming apps as well which many people will use it for whether that’s Netflix or Kodi this will deliver the best in performance compared to other VPN’s.

It has a large number of servers you can choose from and works the best with Netflix allowing you to access Geo-blocked content the best out of the other providers.

You don’t have to worry about your privacy with expressVPN no log policy and the security of the VPN is top-notch with no leaks.

The only 2 drawbacks we see is they don’t have a browser extension for opera and safari but most people may use google chrome and firefox which you won’t have an issue and also the pricing is a little higher than other providers but what you get extra in customer support and quality is worth the bit extra in our opinion.
